They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Having said that, before we get into a discussion about the water levels at Boone Lake, I want you to take a look at the following photo:
There have been a lot of rumors and negative press about the ongoing Tennessee Valley Authority repair project at Boone Dam that’s brought the water level down a bit at the lake. The reality is there is still plenty of lake left to enjoy at Boone.
The TVA says the drawdown puts the water level at about 25 feet lower than the normal summer levels. With a max depth of 130 feet, that means there is still plenty of boatable water at a maximum depth of 100 feet on Boone Lake. Even with some shore line exposed in the shallower areas, the overall length of the lake is just a mile less than normal. That leaves you nearly 30 miles of beautiful Boone Lake to enjoy!
It’s important to note that the ongoing work at Boone Dam is a necessary inconvenience for everyone involved. The work being done is crucial for the safety of the dam, the lake, and anyone around it. The TVA is working with the Army Corps of Engineers and other agencies to protect the dam’s foundation from being damaged due to water and sediment seepage. The original sinkhole that prompted the repairs has been cleared, but without fixing this larger problem more sinkholes or foundation damage could occur in the future and cause major problems.
Let’s face it – some people have heard the negative press and are avoiding the lake. Their loss is your gain! Less boat traffic means even more room for you have a relaxing floating day on a pontoon or put the pedal to the metal on a high-powered ski boat.
We took a day out on the lake with a camera so you can see for yourself.  We started out at Rockingham Marina, home of Carefree Boat Club on Boone Lake, and headed towards Boone Dam.  The new beach feature they are adding near the dam is nearing completion and is looking great.  The lake is nice and wide closer to the dam as well, leaving plenty of room for tubing, skiing, etc.  From there we headed out towards Tri Cities Regional Airport and Lakeview Marina at marker 2.  Along the way there was even more wide, deep water for everyone to enjoy.  We went as far as marker 6 before we turned around to head back.  Long story short – Boone Lake is still very enjoyable and will turn out to be a great option this summer for you and your family!
